When the takedowns came Salovaara’s defence kept him out of serious trouble, and as the fourth round commenced, ‘The Beast’ appeared to be tiring slightly. The second and third rounds were both edged on the feet by Alers, however one shot did appear to damage his nose. As the clock ticked down Alers secured a rear naked choke, but some frantic defending kept Salovaara in the fight. ‘The Beast’ smoothly passed the guard, securing full mount and back mount while dropping intermittent ground ‘n’ pound on the helpless Finn. It was the American who came out harder in the first, walking through Salovaara’s opening salvo to secure a takedown. Going into Saturday’s main event, #10 ranked European Joni Salovaara and American prospect Jim Alers were both keen to succeed Conor McGregor as the 145lb kingpin.
